| Crossing of the alps by mountain bike - Oberstdorf to Riva |
|
This crossing of the alps with the MTB begins in Oberstdorf in Germany and ends in Riva at lake Garda in Italy.
GPS route data of the alps crossing Oberstdorf to Riva
You can download the correct GPS file for this alps crossing from my homepage. I cycled this track in September 2007 and recorded it on my 60CSx. I manually eliminated recording errors in
the GPS file between Oberstdorf and Riva with digital maps of KOMPASS. The route of this
alps crossing is not realy ideal, because there are a lot parts where you have to carry or push your bike.
According to the statements of other mountain bikers the "Albrecht Route", which I unfortunately didn't cycle is the better
option. I can imagine that there are better passages for a mountain
biker on his alps crossing, as the Schrofenpass, Uina Gorge
and the Passo Croce Domini with over 30% raising. For the
Schrofenpass and the Uina Gorge you have to be free of vertigo. For my taste too much risk - I would not do it once again. Small Tip: Carry the
mountain bike on the side of the valley.
For my planning the following book was very helpful: Dream routes Transalp

Daily report of the mountain bike alps crossing from Oberstdorf to RivaMTB Transalp Oberstdorf Riva - Arrival in OberstdorfFor our mountain bike alps crossing from Oberstdorf to Riva, we arrived one day befor in Oberstdorf by train. Traveling by train takes a long time. After we arrived in Oberstdorf, we cycled up to our hotel. The hotel is somewhat hidden in the forest. Nevertheless, we arrived at night in the hotel Gruben in Oberstdorf. MTB Transalp Oberstdorf - Konstanzer Hut - Day 1After a good breakfast, we started in the direction of Schrofenpass. At the end of the mobile route you have to carry your bike to the saddle of Schrofenpass through the rocks and over the famous steel ladder. I didn't like this section because I am not free from vertigo. So I had my problems. With the help of other mountain bikers I could do the passage with the bridge. After crossing the rocks of Schrofenpass, we had to carry the MTB down because the path was too muddy. After that we drove on the main road from Warth to St. Anton. Not exactly a pleasure, beacause there was a lot of traffic. In St. Anton, we took the road to the Konstanzer Hut e little bit late, but we reached the right road over a small path. On this gravel road we hat a excellent drive to the Konstanzer hut. MTB Transalp Constance Hut - Heidelberger Hut - Day 2After a modest breakfast in the Konstanzer hut we went back on our route with the mountain bike. We followed the gravel road in the direction Heilbronner hut. After about 1 hour we went out of the saddle and had to push and carry our bikes to the Heilbronner hut. Nevertheless a rewarding section. From the Heilbronner hut there is a perfect downhill to Galtür. Close fitting ears and down! Great fun! From Galtür we cycled on the bike path to Ischgl and climbed up the Fimbertal to the Heidelberger hut. At first the road was very steep but at the ending easy. The daily goal - Heidelberger hut - was achieved. MTB Transalp Heidelberger hut - Schlinig - Day 3After a good breakfast in the morning we went to the Fimberpass - we had to carry and push our bicycles once again. After about 1 1 / 2 hours we reached the pass. Good cyclists can ride the single trail down. After brief driving you have to push and carry your bike once again, because the road is over here since 2005. You have to walk in the creek. After about 1 / 2 hour you ride further Sur En. Very beautiful. After lunch we drove to Uina gorge. We had a good star, sometimes the road is a little bit steep, but we could do it without problems. At the entrance to the gorge we had to carry our bikes once again. The Uina Gorge is certainly a great experience if you are vertigo free and don't have a mountain biking with you. This narrow path with loose gravel, partly no railings, steep rocks and traffic in both directions. I had some help of other bikers and so we were moving forward. After the gorge we were biking to the Sesvenna hut. After Sesvenna hut, we had a nice departure at the Hotel Edelweiss in Schlinig. MTB Transalp Schlinig - Grosio - Day 4After a pleasant stay at the Hotel Edelweiss, we had a downhill run to Santa Maria, the starting point for the route to Val Vau. Wonderful to drive. Unfortunately, we had rain in the valley an snow at the mountain. We put on warmer clothes and moved on to Val Mora. An absolute hammer this track. This track I have to cycle once again. After Lago di Cancano we had a wonderful outlook on the hairpined road to Bormio. Unfortunately, we can not downhill this road - we had to move on to Passo di Verva. This road is sometimes a little bit steep. On the last meters I had to push once again. No power! The downhill run to Grosio was very exciting, but at a late hour in snow and rain quite cold. After an exhausting day we reach the village Grosio and took a room in the hotel Sassella. This is the end of a beautiful day. In my opinion, the best day in the saddle. MTB Transalp Grosio - Breno - Day 5After a good breakfast we returned to our track and the daily peak - Passo Mortirolo was not waiting for us. The guys from the Giro came up here certainly faster than we did, but our goal was the way and we found the right one here. This pass is not to simplest, but we had more worse things behind us. After the Passo Mortirolo we cycled down to Breno. A day on which you can relax a bit. MTB Transalp Breno - Lodron - Day 6At the morning, it goes to the Passo Croce Domini. A real devil on the road we took. Most of the time the road was very steep - over 30%. The road is partially paved, then again with very coarse gravel and at the end really good for cycling. Along the road we had some dogs and we had only two possibilities: crank or be eaten. This track was 100% shitty. Those who wants to go on this pass, should take the normal road. With the luggage and all the days in the legs that route is no longer fun. Although the subsequent valley is very beautiful. The way to Lodron is just some ups and downs better and maid fun again. MTB Tansalp Lodron - Riva - Day 7The last day has come and it goes to Riva. Previously, however, there is still some work. The last stage began with the ramp to Bondone. Steep climb to about 1500 m. From there over uncycleable roads to Bocca di Caplone. At Tombe there starts a trail around Monte Caplone. Then it goes to M.ga. Pra di Lavino. The highlight of the day comes: Tremalzo! Nice departure, but too much traffic, as actually anywhere on Lake Garda. Further multi day tracks
